15th June 1999:After a month of intense,montonous and torturous practise sessions,our school team was finally ready.Yes,ready to chant Sanskrit Prayer in front of packed auditorium.One by one,everyone will mesmerise the crowd by powerful prayers.(I thought to myself) and I will just fall off stage or die of an heart attack or cry in front of 500 monstrous people.I was trembling,struggling and refusing to accept the fact that I have to do this alone on such a big stage.So,I took a deep breath and listened to my heart,I called sick the day before the event and acted better than any professional actor can ever dream to,until my parents and teachers were convinced.I won my game but lost the battle.My first official experience at public speaking event was not even a failure because I didn`t even try.
15th December 2004:I was in 9th Standard,discovering life and sweating more than usual.I was good in english essay but today I had to give a presentation on communication skills.Stage was set and I was ready to embarrass myself again.Guess what? My performance that day was better than Michael Jackson as I lost counts of how many times I shaked my legs.That was the closest I have come to dancing on stage.It was my second failure in public speaking but yes this time I atleast tried,cried and danced.
15th december 2019:Here I am giving my 10th speech in toastmasters.I have overcome every kind of fear that was in my mind to reach here.I dissolved my earlier identity of not being a performer to the one who is excited to be on stage.Yes,it took me 20 years to dissolve my identity.Identity I picked up in childhood unconsciously and later became a part of me.Ask yourself what fears you have and where have they come from? Once you identify the source,its easy to remove it and recreate a new belief.
You can dissolve your identity and become whoever you want to.All our life we are chasing goals,deadlines and dreams to create a unique identity for ourself.We all want to learn, grow and evolve.Have we learnt to unlearn,leave and give up? Unlearning is more important than learning, to expand our potential and rediscover our hidden talents.
James Clear in his book atomic habits clearly talks about how by simply changing your identity,you can achieve things you haven`t dreamt of. The root of behavior change and building better habits is your identity. Each action you perform is driven by the fundamental belief that it is possible. So if you change your identity (the type of person that you believe that you are), then it’s easier to change your actions .Outcomes are about what you get. Processes are about what you do. Identity is about what you believe.Habits are compound interest of self improvement.
This brings us to an important question: How, exactly, is your identity formed? And how can you emphasize new aspects of your identity that serve you and gradually erase the pieces that hinder you?
If you’re looking to make a change, then I say stop worrying about results and start worrying about your identity. Become the type of person who can achieve the things you want to achieve. Build identity-based habits now. The results can come later.Your identity emerges out of your habits. You are not born with preset beliefs. Every belief, including those about yourself, is learned and conditioned through experience.You want to be a leader,become the type of person who initiates everything. Yes,you wont become a leader in an instant,but you start building that identity and with every breakthrough,you come one step closer.
Fate of british cycling changed one day in 2003,with the introduction of Dave Brailsford as performance director.British cycling team had one only single gold medal since 1908.After he took charge cycling team won 178 world championship with 5 Tour De france titles.All he did was to identify and make minor changes in every aspect that affects performance from tyres to seats to sleep pattern to diet to coaches hiring policy.You can be anything just give up and your identity and choose a new one,dont attach yourself to anything,
Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become. If you finish a book, then you are the type of person who likes reading. If you go to the gym,then perhaps you are the type of person who likes exercise. If you practice playing the guitar, perhaps you are the type of person who likes music. Each habit is like a suggestion: “Hey, maybe this is who I am.”
Jerry Seinfeld is one of the greatest comedian of all time but what is more remarkable is his consistency in producing shows after shows.
His rule is simple:Get a big wall calendar that has a whole year on one page and hang it on a prominent wall. The next step was to get a big red magic marker. He said for each day that I do my task of writing, I get to put a big red X over that day.
After a few days you’ll have a chain. Just keep at it and the chain will grow longer every day. You’ll like seeing that chain, especially when you get a few weeks under your belt. Your only job is to not break the chain.”
For this rule to work:You need to pick a task that is meaningful enough to make a difference, but simple enough that you can get it done. Implement this in whatever you want to achieve and you will reach your top potential.
Uncovering hidden potential:In school days,I identified myself only with sports,then I had passion for engineering design and mechanics and now I am passionate about words,poetry and everything that is artistic.When you start questioning your old identities,you can break them open and come up with something extraordinary.You can be anything you want to be.
Just dissolve your identity,reinforce those belief that serve you and remove those that stop you.You will fly again.
